Event 1: Greek Life Bid Day

Over the weekend groups of Millsaps freshmen men and women will gather, donning the letters and colors of their new Greek affiliations and join the upperclassmen members, marking an official end to Recruitment. Since a large population of the Millsaps student body—60 percent—is Greek-affiliated, bid day tends to be a big deal on campus.

Men’s bid day starts around 5 p.m. on Friday

Women’s run occurs at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Bell Tower

Event 2: Bass Drum of Death w/ Spacewolf
When: Saturday, Sept. 13, 10 p.m.

When Bass Drum of Death stopped in at Martin’s this past February, former P&W contributor Mo Wilson described the band as “punky garage rock for bonfires: scuzzy, raw and loud, the perfect soundtrack for gas station parking lots.” You can get a taste of its sound here. Joining BDoD is local band Spacewolf, whose post grunge rock sound recently reverberated at Birmingham’s Secret Stage festival.

Let Martin’s provide you a soundtrack for rabble rousing, sweating, fighting and raising some good old-fashioned hell.

Event 3: Daughters of Anarchy
When: Saturday, 7 p.m.
Where: Jackson Convention Complex, 105 E. Pascagoula St.
Price: $12 in advance, $15 at the door
Why you should go:

     Roller derby has become a bit of a cult sport. The rules may be confusing (don’t worry, they’ll explain it at the beginning); the derby names are equal parts amusing, raunchy, and violent; and fishnets abound. If you’ve never seen a roller derby bout in person (sorry, watching Whip It repeatedly does not count), now is your chance to witness some local badassery, and maybe unleash a bit of your own.

     Jackson’s own roller derby team, the Magnolia Roller Vixens, will be playing their last home bout this Saturday against the Hub City Derby Dames. The theme is Daughters of Anarchy and the audience is encouraged to dress to theme, so pull out your baddest leather jacket. For more info, check out the Magnolia Roller Vixens’ Facebook page.
