Since this year brings that magical and rare occasion when All Hallow’s Eve falls on a weekend, we’ve got an equally magical roundup of events for you.
Event 1: Hall-O-Read Carnival and Trunk-or-Treat
1 Campus 1 Community hosts two events this Halloween that give you the chance to hang out with some kids (while still leaving time to party later). Hall-O-Read is an annual reading fair at Brown Elementary (146 Ash St.) from noon-2 p.m., where 1C1C sets up activity tables to make crafts, play games and give out temporary tattoos.
If you’re free later in the evening, join the fellows for Trunk-or-Treat, which is essentially trick-or-treating except Midtown children go car-to-car, where students and volunteers pass out candy and toys.
To sign up for one or both events, click here or contact the 1C1C fellows at 1c1c@millsaps.edu
Event 2: Town Creek Arts Festival
When: Sat. Nov. 1, 10 a.m.- 6 p.m.
Where: Mississippi Museum of Art
Price: Free
This fourth annual all-day festival in the Art Garden is in conjuncture with several events throughout downtown, all with a Mississippi focus. Aside from the fun, games and performances at the festival on the Museum’s grounds—which will include the Belhaven Dance performance at 2 p.m., and a step performance at 3 p.m.— there will also be the Art Space 86 pop up gallery featuring many Mississippi artists. Also included is The Big Draw Mississippi, where visitors can be a part of creating a free-form mural. The festival coincides with the opening of the museum’s Mississippi Invitational show as well as Downtown on Display, where you’ll have the chance to explore downtown’s businesses and architecture to your heart’s content (and I must say, spaces like the Standard Life Building are phenomenal).
The festival will conclude with a Mississippi-Made concert with several bands performing “the sounds of Mississippi”.There will be a cash bar and food throughout the day, and at 6 p.m., Jackson’s food trucks will roll onto the site.
Event 3: JFP Chick Ball Masked Jam
When: Sat., Nov. 1, 7 p.m.
Where: Hal & Mal’s
Price: $5
Every summer, the Jackson Free Press hosts the Chick Ball, a gala to fundraise against domestic violence. This year marks the publication’s first ever Chick Ball Masked Jam, a pre-Chick Ball event. Come in your best costumes (a good chance to show off your costume cleverness outside the Bubble) ready for a full night of music from 7 p.m. to midnight, while raising money for the Mississippi Coalition Against Domestic Violence. The line-up includes Hot Tamales at 7 p.m., Pan Confer at 7:30, Young Valley at 8:10, and DJ Phingaprint from 9:30 to midnight. There will also be a costume contest and Southern-Fried Karaoke. For more info, click here.
Event 4: Halloweezy 2014
When: Sat., Nov. 1, 10 p.m.
Where: Pi Kappa Alpha House
Finally, a Millsaps Halloween tradition: Pike’s annual Halloweezy party. Since this party’s reputation precedes itself, and it is a Halloween party, I’m pretty sure that I don’t need to describe what you will find or why you should come. Fraternity member Scott Tafoya urges Millsaps students to come in your tackiest and/or most innovative costumes, and reminds us that you need to show a Millsaps ID at the entrance.
In the meantime, head over to Arts and Life for a Halloween playlist, and I’ll leave you with this for a spooky, scary Halloween:
