“Gazing Beyond: An Inside Look at the James Observatory”

Opened in 1901, the James Observatory is the oldest building at Millsaps and also one of the first observatories on a college campus in Mississippi—but how many students actually know that much about it? Tucked away on a far corner of campus, the building looms over the track and intrigues those who have not been able to venture inside. Recently, I interviewed Stan Galicki, Millsaps professor and associate dean of sciences, and Ben Nichols, a Millsaps alum who has impressive experience with the building and the field of astronomy in the state. They shared its long history, its impressive telescope, and plans for the future. If you’ve ever wanted to gaze beyond the dome and the thick walls of the James Observatory, then this documentary is for you.
