Dierra is a junior biochemistry major from Petal, Miss. She currently serves as captain of the Millsaps cheer team. She loves hot Cheeto puffs, but despises regular Cheetos.
P&W: What made you come to Millsaps?
Dierra Myers: I liked that it had a small-school vibe. I knew the classes would be smaller and I’d have one-on-one time with my teachers. It would be easier than going to a big state school. I attended a youth leadership here my sophomore year and everybody made me feel really welcomed. … The big one (reason) would be when I saw their acceptance rate into medical school.
P&W: What is your favorite part of campus?
DM: The football field. That’s usually where I’m the most excited.
P&W: What one person on campus do you look up to the most?
DM: Jamesia Kennedy. I follow her on social media, and I can see how dedicated she is to her studies. I aspire to be like that. … I would say I look up to her.
P&W: What career field do you plan to go into?
DM: My plan would be to go to medical school and then specialize in Obstetrics and Gynecology.
P&W: What’s the most embarrassing thing that’s happened to you?
DM: I almost killed my best friend, Alyssa. We were in cheer practice, and she was waving a pom-pom in my face. It hit me in the eye so I hit her back, and the rest is history. She was in the hospital, and she had a tumor in her spleen or something, and I made it rupture. I saved her life. … That’s what she doesn’t like to mention. The doctor said I saved her life.
P&W: What one thing are you proud of right now?
DM: My perseverance. I thought about leaving here a lot, but it’s my third year here and I stuck it out.
P&W: What one thing annoys you the most?
DM: People not willing to help other people. I can’t stand when people aren’t supportive of each other, especially black females. I hate it when we don’t have each other’s backs.
P&W: What one place would you like to travel to and why?
DM: Jamaica. I’d like to go to try the foods.
P&W: Describe yourself in three words.
DM: Strong-minded. Bubbly. Determined.
