For freshmen, move-in day is today, and there are a few items that you should keep in mind when packing up your bags to move to your home away from home.
1. Headphones/ Eye Mask
This almost goes without saying, but headphones will come in handy for several reasons: from walking to class to drowning out your talkative roommate. An eye mask is helpful as you can catch some Z’s between classes, even when your roommate is still up burning the midnight oil.
2. First Aid Kit
You’re not at home with your parents to take care of you when you get sick anymore, so do yourself a favor and buy a First Aid Kit with pain medicine, cough medicine, etc. Though, if you find that that isn’t enough, the Wesson Health Center is open at various times throughout the week.
3. Water Filter/ Water Bottle
Both of these items are essential because, even if you have a water filter, you won’t always have access to water in your dorm. Packing a water bottle means that, no matter where you are on campus, you’ll always have access to clean water.
4. Bed Risers
This will come in handy if you’re staying in any of the dorms where the beds are close to the floor. Using bed risers will also allow you to store items under your bed.
Move in day is pretty hectic with trying to open boxes and cut drawer liners and things of that nature, so bring scissors to make your life 10 times easier.
6. Sweater/Rain Jacket
Southerners love using the air conditioner, so some classrooms will have you feeling like you’re in an icebox. Pack a sweater and rain jacket for those days when it’s 40 degrees and rainy in the morning and suddenly 90 degrees with a blazing hot sun by the afternoon.
Who doesn’t love music? Whether you’re studying or just having fun, having a speaker to amplify your music is lit.
8. Cleaning Supplies
Before you move in and throughout the year, you’ll want to clean your dorm room. Clorox wipes, Lysol, a broom and trash bags go a long way.
Dorm rooms are pretty boring and you have to live in them for an entire year, so pictures and knick knacks to spice up the place are vital. Each dorm has specific requirements of what can be used to hang pictures, so check accordingly.
College life can become pretty busy, and we’re only human, so we definitely forget things. To stay professional and show up to events on time, you’ll need to keep track of all your commitments. They also help to keep track of all your assignments and the thousands of papers you’ll have to write.
