Event 1: Joshua James
When: Fri., 9 p.m. (doors open at 8 p.m.)
Where: Duling Hall, 622 Duling Ave.
Price: $10 advance, $15 at the door
All ages

Joshua James’ sound does not fit easily into one category. Singer-songwriter? Sure. Folk? Kind of. Self-described as “Neo-folk,” James brings his own spin to the genre. From the acoustic heartfelt folk to ominous harder rock sounds, James remains always emotional, captivating and a bit odd (in the best way). Fans of the cable series Sons of Anarchy might recognize James’ sound; his songs “Crash This Train” and “Coal War” have both been featured.

Also playing are two Nashville-based folk bands, Armon Jay and Neulore.

Joshua James’ twangy and quirky brand promises an equally unique experience, especially for the $10 price tag. For a taste, check out the video below:

Event 2: WellsFest
When: Sat., 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.
Where: Jamie Fowler Boyll Park, Lakeland Drive
Price: Free
Why you should go:

WellsFest is one of Jackson’s foremost festivals (in its 31 year now), packed with back-to-back music, a 5K run, food booths, arts and crafts vendors, and silent auctions. Native Mississippian and blues artist Vasti Jackson headlines the festival, which will also include music from a variety of genres, including Millsaps own James Martin, Latinismo, Young Valley, and more.
