The Millsaps women’s basketball team enjoyed a very successful weekend with wins over conference foes Rhodes and Hendrix. Coming into Friday’s game, the Rhodes Lynx were ranked 21st in the country by d3hoops.com, compared to the Majors, who were unranked. Needless to say, Millsaps wasn’t looking at an easy win.

The game was close the entire way through as both teams traded baskets to the final buzzer. Kala-Jewel Freeman and Velvet Johnson led the way for the Majors, each scoring double figures. The Majors shot a remarkable 44 percent from the field, while also dishing out 16 assists—led by Velvet Johnson’s eight and Samantha Perez’s six. A balanced attack and great second half by the Majors ultimately led to the team’s 58-56 win over the Lynx for Rhodes’ first conference loss.

Many may have called it an upset, but the Lady Majors are no joke, and they again proved it against Hendrix on Sunday.

In another great defensive performance, the Majors held the Hendrix Warriors to only 14 points in the paint, compared to the Majors’ 22. It was a tightly contested game from start to finish with four ties and nine lead changes—Millsaps owned the game’s largest lead at just nine points.

With clutch free throws down the stretch by Velvet Johnson and Miah Brooks, the Majors secured the win. Johnson led the team with 18 points and a perfect 10-10 from the free throw line. Brooks also snatched a game-high 13 rebounds.

The Majors came out of the successful weekend with a 10-6 overall record and a 4-2 conference record. The team travels to Oglethorpe Friday to face off with the Stormy Petrels.
